Usually, the covers designed for this book feature representations of the beach and groups of boys. However, I chose to reference my favorite episode and one of the book's most impactful moments as the main icon for the cover. This is the carousel scene, where the boys play freely in an amusement park, representing a brief moment of childhood.

As a background, I used the textures from Henri Gervex's painting The Beach at Trouville, since his work depicts a shed on a beach, which reminded me of the story of Captains of the Sands. I recolored it in Illustrator to make the image evoke the sea and sand dunes of Northeastern Brazil. The horse illustrations were also created in Illustrator using collage and overlapping techniques combined with the sand texture.
